Veolia Withdraws Proposal for Incinerator at Matraville

This afternoon Veolia (who now own Suez) officially withdrew their proposal to attach a waste incinerator to OPAL’s Matraville Paper Mill.

We already knew that Veolia’s ridiculous proposal was dead in the water, but it’s great to get the news officially!

A big thank you to Matt Thistlethwaite, Michael Daley, Cr Danny Said, Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker, Bayside Mayor Christina Curry, Cr Noel D’Souza, Cr Bill Burst, former Cr Carlos Da Rocha, the staff at the Randwick and Bayside Councils and all the Matto locals who have given us so much help and support throughout the campaign – we couldn’t have done it without you!

It’s great news for the City of Randwick and Matraville, but don’t forget we still have other massive incinerators proposed for Blacktown, Eastern Creek and Tarago – none of those communities deserve them either!

  1. Well done indeed. It was a massive task and, once again, people power prevailed. A big thank you to all involved. Your tenacity was the essential ingredient!

  2. Thank you NMI, it’s so good to know for sure that’s over. About Western Sydney incinerators, Chris Bowen told the rally at Minchinberry that the NSW gov could quickly put an end to them by regulation. The same rally of very concerned residents heard from local ALP members about their opposition to the incinerators. I wonder where the state ALP stands and what policy they will take to the March election. Any clues?
