Last Friday Tanya Davies (Member for Mulgoa) announced that “Large-scale Energy from Waste projects will be banned in the Sydney basin” and that waste to energy incinerators “cannot be developed in Western Sydney.”
So, what does this mean for the residents of Matraville?? See our response here.
Suez’s proposed waste incinerator at OPAL’s paper mill is not considered to be a “large” WtE facility and therefore has NOT been ruled out!
This means that the fight is NOT over!! Make sure that Matt Kean and Rob Stokes know that Suez’s proposed incinerator is not acceptable in Matraville or anywhere else! Here’s how to Object!
We do not need this health issue to be built for the greater good of SYDNEY
If you think this is a good idea you are mad
In the times we live in WHY are you supporting to polute the air we breath

Will the stacks have filtration systems?

Hi Lincoln
Thanks for your query. Unfortunately the filtration systems on even the most modern of incinerators being built overseas will not remove ultrafine and nano-sized particles. So while the discharge may look clear these particles can carry toxic heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on their surface and because they are so small they can enter your blood stream when you breathe them in carrying the pollutants with them.
In Europe they are finding large concentrations of these pollutants building up in the environment and being made worse because the plants discharge significantly more pollutants when they are starting up, shutting down or have a process upset and these events happen regularly.
You can read more about it here: https://zerowasteeurope.eu/2019/06/the-story-of-rec/ and the link to the academic paper cited Hidden emissions – A story from the Netherlands is at the bottom of the story.
The good news is that there is a viable alternative and you can read about it here: : https://www.pwc.com.au/important-problems/environment-social-governance/building-a-more-circular-australia.html
